Artist's Comments

Sorta still a WIP. Feel free to pick it apart and point out things y'don't like. Or like.

It is, however, proof that I'm not dead. I've just been insanely busy lately trying to work school/financial stuffs out and only achieving partial success.

...oh, right. Austrealeus. Leaf Dragon. Comic Stuff. Scales still make good sanity breaks. I've actually barely touched the scales with the burn tool- it's primarily just the dodge tool. I'm trying to figure out if I'm okay with just the dodge or if I want to burn it, too. (Heehee. Burning stuff. Where's me marshmallows?)

the wings are nice, with the hand/claws, but, correct me if im wrong, but the fins on its head are kinda weird for a land dwelling dragon

Ahh, Austreleus! He looked awesome in the comic, and he looks even more awesome here. :aww: I love his design.

I certainly won't correct you, but I will try to explain some of the reasoning as to why those fins are there. ^.-.^
If the fins and the horns (the lower 4 are actually only modified scales) are removed, this guy has a head like a viper. Well, a viper with a chin that could beat out a can opener any day. So partly why they're there is to avoid that. And from a mythological perspective, crests are one of the most common and universal features of dragons.
Heading towards the physiological: With the wing membrane extending down along the tail as a nigh-useless uropatagium, it made sense to have something similar going on with the propatagium (I always used to call it the "elbow membrane" before I learned that it actually had a name). So the frills run down the neck and become the propatagium. They also serve as a form of display and communication. Aerodynamically, they're not a hindrance. This guy is more of a gliding sort of dragon- he can totally fly, of course, but gliding is a bit more his thing - That's why the fore and hind legs are so muscular. The hind legs to provide the jump, and the forelegs to be the first to land and not break under the dragon's weight.
....yep. I rather hope that that makes some amount of sense... sometimes I really suck at trying to explain things, so I apologize in advance.

Oh, and thank you for the comment! ^ ^

Austre's just a cool and awesome dude all 'round, sez I.
...of course, I'm also privy to things like "the entire plot w/ translations" so I might be cheating.
Thanks! (I do a happy dragon dance, though I'm afraid that you'll just have to take my word for it, this being the 'net an' all.)
:)

Mm, burn tool... Oh, marshmellows are good too. Especially when they're all mushy.

How would you draw this dragon with its wings fully closed? I'd be really interested to see how that looked, especially from a back view... Would the joints fold thrice, all the way against the body? (Sorry, just curious)
